Introduction to Oslo, Norway
The commercial, political and cultural centre of Norway, Oslo is a fabulously tidy and attractive city with a history stretching back more than 1,000 years. Visitors staying at Oslo hotels can enjoy a truly laid-back capital that boasts fine waterfront scenery and is surrounded by dense forests. Museums are a huge attraction here, with the city offering an exhibit for pretty well everybody. Edvard Munch's epic painting, the Scream, is a top attraction at the National Gallery, less than two kilometres to the west of the centre. Tourists can also enjoy guided tours of the royal palace, Det Kongelige Slott, which is close to the National Gallery. Substantially more time should be devoted to visiting the Norwegian Folk Museum, a 'living' open-air museum occupying a huge area of land about 10 minutes from the centre by car. Next door, the Vikingskipshuset offers a chance to sample real Viking history, including a dramatic pair of ships' hulls from the 9th century. The voyage to Polynesia by explorer Thor Heyerdahl is commemorated at the Kon-Tiki Museum.Visit our Oslo Travel Guide
