Leknes is a shopping and trading hub in the geographic centre of the Lofoten island archipelago in Norway's northernmost county of Nordland. The only other place in the archipelago which has more shops and services than this municipality of 2,647 people is Svolvaer, 68kms away. Guests at Leknes hotels will stay in total darkness between early December and early January, but the sun never sets here between mid-May and mid-July. This village may not have the picturesque seaside centres, thriving fishing economy and distinctive wooden architecture of other Lofoten communities. However, the surrounding area is filled with towering cliffs and mountains as well as beaches of white sand where visitors can sunbathe under the midnight sun. Several cruise ships dock at Leknes Havn harbour, one of the most important ports Norway has to offer. Daily flights to both Svolvaer and another community, Bodo, are widely available at the local airport. The regional hospital can be found in the village's twin town of Gravdal, while the main attraction in another neighbouring community, Fygle, is the museum inside a former school.
