Introduction to Honningsvag - City Centre
Honningsvag competes with three other settlements claiming to be the world's northernmost city. This town of just over 2,300 souls is located on a calm bay on the southern shore of Mageroya Island in Norway. This is a popular stop for cruise ships, particularly in the short and always eagerly anticipated summer. Honningsvag City Centre hotels are conveniently near the bay plus a big cinema offering audio-visual performances, an old church and an art gallery. As the village is so small, many of the tourist attractions lie in the hinterland. These include experiencing up close the nearby nomadic Sami culture's tents and reindeer. During wintertime and when the sky is clear, the Aurora Borealis is spectacular and colourful on a grand scale. The sky is also remarkable from mid-May to late July, when the phenomenon of the midnight sun takes place. The Honningsvag area is too far north to support many trees, but nature still impresses here with its myriad lakes and bays.
