Introduction to Haugesund - City Centre
Haugesund presents a wealth of attractions. Its charming city hall dates from 1931. The pink, neoclassical building is one of the best in Norway. Its position on the town square near a park makes it stand out all the more. While modern shopping centres have given the city centre more competition, downtown retains much of its splendour. Haugesund also boasts its own popular film festival. While there are many fine Haugesund City Centre hotels, it is also enjoyable to stay not far from the town in campsites, traditional fishermen's cabins known as rorbuer, or even a lighthouse. An area attraction is a steep waterfall near the east end of the deep and scenic Akrafjord, near Etne. During the short summer, the beaches of Karmoy come alive. They feature ideal white and soft sand, and perfect conditions for strolling. History-wise there is the area's oldest seat of the kings in Norway dating from 872 AD. The spot is marked by a memorial erected in 1872.
