Introduction to Hamar - City Centre

Hamar, the main settlement in Hedmark county, delivers on many levels for tourists, particularly in terms of its deep culture and pristine nature. The town is lapped by the waters of Lake Mjosa, Norway's biggest lake. You'll find Hamar City Centre hotels within a range of urban highlights such as the Hedmark Museum, which contains the remnants of a medieval church, traditional farmhouses, an Episcopal fortress and medieval, ethnological and archaeological exhibits. The town is also home to a fine speed-skating rink and Olympia Hall, dubbed Vikingskipet (Viking ship) for how it appears. The arena was built for speed-skating races during the 1994 Winter Olympics that were based in nearby Lillehammer. Pedestrian walkways make it easy getting around Hamar city centre, where there's a library, a movie house and a farmer's market in Stortorget ('Big Square'). Also make sure to hit the Domkirkeruinene (cathedral ruins), the delightfully dilapidated Hamar Cathedral, Hamar Railway Station and the pretty Asta River.
