In the traditional region of Gudbrandsdal in central Norway is the municipality of Gausdal. Farming and logging are the traditional economic engines of this area, though tourism has recently emerged as an important industry. From the lowland valleys of Vestre Gausdal up through the alpine valley of Espedalen, this area is loaded with incredible scenery. One of Norway's highest villages is here, Skabu, known for its sheer cliffs and beautiful historic architecture. Aulestad is another nice village to visit, and a great place to sleep over in Gausdal hotels and enjoy local dining. The geological potholes at Helvete should not be missed either. These massive holes in the earth were formed at the end of the last Ice Age and rarely fail to awe spectators. Skiing at Skeikampen is incredible in the winter months, but in summer its slopes open up for world-class hiking and biking.
