Introduction to Flam, Norway
Many tourist attractions within the southwest Norwegian municipality of Aurland can be found in a smaller village called Flam. Tourists have flocked to this scenic village on the innermost coastline of the breathtaking Aurlandsfjord since the later part of the 19th century, and an average of nearly 450,000 guests now stay at Flam hotels each year. The RMS Queen Mary 2 is just one of the approximately 130 cruise ships which dock at the village harbour every year, and cyclists enjoy pedaling along the relaxing Rallarvegen road between the village and the community of Finse. However, the most famous means of transportation here remains the 20km long Flam Railway, which travels along some of the world's steepest rail tracks between the village and the Myrdal mountain station. The railway receives its power from the magnificent Kjosfossen waterfall, just one among many breathtaking landmarks passengers will encounter on this unforgettable journey. A rail museum is located next to the local rail station, but even more regional history is depicted inside Otternes Bygdetun's 27 historic buildings, many of which date from the 1600s.
