Introduction to Fagernes, Norway
No settlement in the scenic Valdres Valley of southern Norway possesses a larger population than Fagernes. The convenient location of all Fagernes hotels in the middle of Valdres makes this newly designated city an ideal base from which to explore this breathtakingly beautiful region whose oldest settlements date back more than 8,000 years. The name of this small city combines the Norwegian words for 'fair' and 'headland'. This community may be just a three-hour drive away from Norway's national capital, Oslo, but visitors may also enter Fagernes through its airport, whose 829m above sea level altitude is higher than that of any other airport in all of Scandinavia. The community is the home of Valdres Folk Museum, the biggest Norwegian museum where all the exhibits are displayed in the open air. The national park of Jotunheimen, the waterfalls of Neselv and a popular holiday resort called Strandefjord are just some of the places under a two-hour drive from here.
