Introduction to Balestrand, Norway
Tourists have flocked to the tranquil community of Balestrand in southwest Norway since the 19th century. Today, visitors are still attracted to the village's breathtaking location between Norway's highest mountain peaks and the shores of the deepest and longest fjord not only in Norway, but the entire world - Sognefjord. Although the village contains three Church of Norway churches called Kvamsoy, Saele, Tjugum, its best known religious building is the Anglican St Olaf's Church. A rotating series of British vicars conduct St Olaf's Sunday services each summer. Sognefjord Aquarium is not only the best place to learn about the sea life that lives in the fjord, but aquarium ticket holders can also reserve kayaks or rowboats to explore the fjord on their own for up to 60 minutes.
