They have captured people's imaginations and led to a noticeable improvement in the quality and diversity of food available. Combined with heavy investments in hotels, restaurants and cafes, Belfast is now an exciting and rewarding place to eat out.
Restaurants are spread out around the city so it's a good idea to decide beforehand what you are looking for. A full range of ethnic cuisines can be found such as Japanese, Thai, Malaysian and Indian.
Local cuisine
Belfast doesn't have a cuisine that it is noted for; however, there are several types of staple foods that are worth trying. Local dishes are best described as unpretentious with freshly caught fish and quality meats prepared in a simple and palatable way. Guinness and beef pie is a favourite, and the oysters from Strangford Lough are recommended.

Other seafood worth looking out for include: the mussels from Dundrum, the Ardglass herring, and the smoked salmon from Glenarm. Cabbage and bacon is traditionally eaten with boiled potatoes, but this is likely only to be found in home-cooking and pub food. The delicious soda bread is usually available in tea shops throughout the region.
