Introduction to Belfast - Airport
Annual passenger numbers at Belfast International Airport hit the five million mark in 2006. In 2007, Aer Lingus opened a base at the airport, its first outside of the Republic of Ireland. Staying the night at Belfast Airport hotels makes it easy for passengers to get around other destinations in the UK and international cities. In 2008, nearly 60 per cent of passengers using the airport were on domestic flights, while 40-odd per cent were on international flights. Business travel makes up 60 per cent of all passengers travelling in and out of Northern Ireland at Belfast International Airport. The state-of-the-art Executive Aviation Terminal opened in 1987, while a new cargo centre opened in 1991. At around 12 miles northwest of Belfast, which is connected to the airport via the M2 motorway and Translink buses, the airport is a convenient gateway for accessing the area's major attractions such as Belfast Castle.
