Once the deal had been agreed, the Maoris denied that they had ever sold the land at Port Nicholson and a land struggle still continues to this day. By the 1850s, Wellington had become a flourishing settlement but an earthquake five years later destroyed some areas of the settlement. This led to the first major reclamation for land.
In 1865, the government relocated to Wellington which then became the capital city of New Zealand and has remained so ever since. Wellington has now firmly placed itself on the world map as a beautiful city with rich culture and heritage.
