By air: Wellington International Airport is about a 20 minute drive from the city. It handles flights from domestic as well international destinations. Air New Zealand, Freedom Air, Qantas, Pacific Blue, Sounds Air, Air2There are just some of the airlines that handle domestic flights. There are also frequent chartered flights that land at the airport.
By train: Wellington’s railway station is located in downtown Wellington and is the arrival point for both the bus and rail systems. Wellington is connected to all major cities through the Tranz Scenic routes. There are daily services to Napier taking five hours; Palmerston North taking two hours; nine hours to Hamilton and 11 hours to get to Auckland. Travelling by train is comfortable and an excellent way to appreciate the beautiful scenery of New Zealand.
By Ferry: Interislander Ferries runs daily services to Picton on the South Island. The trip takes about three to four hours depending on weather conditions. Topcat and Bluebridge ferry services also sail to Picton daily. There are complimentary shuttle services that link the Railway Station to the Interislander Terminal. Cruise ships often dock at Wellington’s harbour during summer. Many ferries carry both cars and passengers.
By road: Wellington can be easily reached via Highway 1 and 2. The roads are in excellent condition and well signposted but distances can are long. It is 195kms from Wanganui; 460kms from Rotorua and 655kms from Auckland.
