Rotorua Travel Guide
By air: Rotorua has its own small airport about 10kms east of the city centre. There are daily connections to and from Auckland, Christchurch, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Taupo and Wellington. If you plan fly from outside the country, then you will need to fly to one of these destinations first in order to fly into Rotorua as the airport only receives domestic flights.
From the airport, shutter bus services are provided to take you to your hotel. Booking should be made in advance at reservations@supershuttle.co.nz.
By train: Rotorua’s train station is on the corner of Railway Road and Lake Road which is just one kilometre northwest of the city centre. The station is only open at arrival and departure times so you must buy your tickets in advance at the Tourism Rotorua Centre. The main train that serves the station is the Geyserland train, operating daily between Auckland and Rotorua.
By car: driving to Rotorua can be good fun and is always rewarding because there are so many scenic routes. Rotorua is three hours from Auckland and five hours from Wellington. To drive from Auckland, you need to take the State Highway 2, 27 and 5. If you come via Hamilton and Cambridge, take State Highway 1 and 5, which will take approximately three hours.
