Long-distance buses are generally reliable and connect with other cities on the South Island. Although there is a train station there is no longer a regular passenger train service. Dunedin can also easily be reached by car using the State Highways.
By air: Dunedin International Airport is somewhat inconveniently located a 40-minute drive from the city. It was the nearest piece of flat land that was big enough for the runway.
By bus: the main long-distance bus routes connect Dunedin to Christchurch and Invercargill, with services departing daily. There are also a number of overnight bus services available. The bus terminal is located on St Andrew Street.
By car: Dunedin can be reached via State Highways 1 and 87. It is approximately a four hour drive south of Christchurch; three hours northeast of Invercargill; and three hours from Queenstown. Driving in the cities can be confusing as there are many one-way streets and roundabouts.
