St Clair: the most popular city beach, St Clair, is just a ten minutes drive from the city centre and features the only surviving salt water pool from the late 1800s. It has recently been refurbished and now has a paddling pool for children and new changing facilities. There is some good surfing during the summer months and the beaches are patrolled, making it safe for swimmers and young families.
The Botanic Garden: is the oldest in New Zealand and has a wide range of amenities and specialised plant collections. The mild climate of Dunedin and the varied topography enables a vast range of plants to be grown. They are organised and displayed as collections in an attractive garden setting including the Japanese garden, bird aviary and the famous rhododendron dell.
Taieri George Train Ride: if you are visiting the historic Railway Station then consider going on the Taieri George Train Ride. This prestige tourist train departs daily and takes you on a journey through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago.
Walking: the area around Dunedin is ideal for walking and there is a network of tracks from bush walks to high hilltop tracks with spectacular views of the city, harbour and coastline.
