The Avon River runs through the stunning botanical gardens and a boat ride is fun in summer, while the TranzAlpine railway from Christchurch to Greymouth is considered one of the finest rail experiences in the world.

Visit a winery: New Zealand is building a good reputation for its wines and there are some excellent wineries in the Christchurch and Canterbury area. The Waipara Valley is around 30 minutes drive north of Christchurch and produces some fine wine.
The Pegasus Bay vineyard is one of the most respected in this area; they are open daily for wine tasting and lunch in the excellent restaurant. There are also a number of tour companies in Christchurch who organise specific wine tasting tours.
For a day trip, it is possible to take the train to Arthur’s Pass and spend five hours exploring before the train returns. If you take the train the entire way to Greymouth, you will have one hour to stroll around town before the return journey.
