For many people, a night out in Christchurch starts along ‘The Strip’. There are a good range of bars, cafes and restaurants offering outdoor dining which is particularly popular in the summer. However, there is a ban on drinking in public places, so be sure to finish your drinks inside.
The Strip tends to be popular with diners in the early part of the evening, but after 23:00, the music begins to pump out and the atmosphere changes to one of a drinker’s paradise. Coyote and All Bar One are two of the busier places, but there are a good number of options here. The end of the strip, near the Bridge of Remembrance is generally popular with a young and slightly rowdier crowd.
Christchurch has a small gay scene. Cruz is the city’s only gay nightclub. On Lichfield Menfriends Sauna, The Box video lounge, and Divas Boutique, a social venue for transvestites and cross dressers, are also popular places.
If you enjoy a flutter, then the Christchurch Casino, New Zealand’s first casino, on Victoria Street, is worth a visit. It’s a vast facility, with a European design and the usual range of gaming machines and tables. There are a number of bars and eateries here and there are a strict dress code, no jeans, t-shirts, sandals, or sportswear. The casino is open 24 hours and offers free shuttles to hotels.
