The city is popular with tourists throughout the year, with the pleasant summers (albeit with some inconsistent weather) popular, as well as the winter when many take advantage of the snow-based activities that are possible here.
The city has plenty to offer the visitor either for a short stay or a more extended holiday in the region, with world renowned botanical gardens, some stunning scenery in Arthur’s Pass National Park, a railway considered one of the most spectacular in the world, a range of interesting museums and a relaxed English town feel to it.
Oxford Terrace is also a popular place for its nightlife with the restaurant crowd giving way to a louder, party crowd in the clubs and bars of the area named ‘The Strip’. Christchurch has a small, friendly gay scene, as well as New Zealand’s first casino and a busy calendar of events and festivals.
Sport is a popular pastime all over New Zealand and Christchurch is no exception. Transportation, both to the city and around is pretty good, with a growing number of long-haul flights serving Christchurch, a good national and local bus service and a small but effective and pleasant tramway serving the city.
