January Festivals
World Buskers Festival: has become one of Christchurch’s most popular festivals in recent years. Established in the early 1990s, the festival sees a range of international comedy, street theatre and circus performers entertain the people of Christchurch over a 10-day period. There is a range of indoor and outdoor venues throughout the day and into the night, attracting over 200,000 spectators.
February Festivals
Vitu-Pacific Arts: is a four-day festival that will introduce you to Pacific arts and entertainment, both modern and traditional. The festival has a range of different events including comedy, music and art demonstrations at a number of venues around the city.
July/August Festivals
The Christchurch Arts Festival: is the largest arts event on the South Island, and one of New Zealand’s biggest arts and cultural events. The festival takes place every two years, with a vast range of exhibitions and performances in 35 different venues around the city.
August Festivals
Christchurch International Film Festival: was established in 1977 to showcase the best of international film to the people of Christchurch and is closely linked to the film festivals in Wellington and Auckland. The festival has a good balance of box-office hits, and less well-known independent productions.
November Festivals
New Zealand Cup and Show Week: has fast become a hit on the national social calendar. Throughout the week, racing, fashion, food, and Christchurch lifestyles are celebrated with a high-energy festival. The festival is considered the highlight of the New Zealand horseracing calendar, but also includes a number of different cultural activities.
