It’s not just South East Asian styles that are thriving in Christchurch, you can find all types of food with Indian, Cajun, European and American cuisine all well represented.
Most of the popular restaurants are located in the heart of the city, within the Four Avenues quadrant and specifically Colombo, Manchester, Cashel and High Streets. Oxford Terrace is considered one of the most beautiful areas in the city, as it follows the course on the Avon River. It is also one of the best streets for bars, restaurants and clubs.
One of the most respected restaurants in this area is the award winning Sala Sala Japanese Restaurant with authentic Japanese cuisine, they are open for lunch and dinner and usually extremely busy, so bookings are recommended.
The area surrounding Cathedral Square also has a good number of restaurants and cafes to choose from. If you want to try something a little different, every day at 19:30, the city’s tram restaurant departs from Cathedral Square tram stop. You can enjoy a superb four-course dining experience as well as the views and atmosphere on the 1905 electric tram as it makes a circuit of the city.
The Waipara Valley area has seen a boom in more unusual locally produced goods. As a result, menus in Christchurch feature truffles, hazelnuts, saffron, and ostrich, all from the local areas.
