Attractions in Christchurch
Cathedral Square: is right at the heart of the city, with the cathedral itself the main focal point. Work began here in 1864, but the cathedral wasn’t actually completed until 1904. The cathedral is renowned for its boys’ choir, who can be heard throughout the week.
The square has several good restaurants, as well as an excellent art and crafts market every Thursday and Friday. There are also some food stalls and street musicians. You can also meet the legendary ‘Wizard or Christchurch’ who performs here everyday in the summer and rants about any number of issues, with religion and politics two of his favourite topics.
Bridge of Remembrance: at Cashel Street was built as a memorial to the soldiers who crossed the river here from the King Edward Barracks en route to the European battlefields during WWI. Within the design are lions symbolising the empire and victory, wreaths for remembrance, and torches to highlight the inscribed battles. The bridge was opened on Armistice Day in 1924 and plaques were later added in memory of those who fought in WWII.
Oxford Terrace and Captain Scott Statue: Oxford Terrace hugs the Avon River and has a number of good restaurants, bars and cafes. After 23:00, the area gives way to a much livelier drinking crowd.
Victoria Square: this square in what was once the business centre of the city was named in honour of Queen Victoria, to commemorate her Jubilee year. To the north sits the town hall, which is especially attractive at night.
You will also find the floral clock, a statue of James Cook and Queen Victoria herself and Christchurch’s oldest iron bridge as well as a tall wooden carved column, known as a poupoou, which commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitonga, and the Maori heritage.
