Beach: Christchurch has three main beaches, New Brighton Beach, Sumner Beach and Taylor’s Mistake. Taylor’s Mistake is most popular with the surfing crowd, as the waves here are higher. There is also a good cliff walk from Taylor’s Mistake to Boulder Bay.
New Brighton Beach is located 8kms from the city centre and is popular for fishing as well as surfing. New Brighton Beach is also quite popular with families. Sumner Beach is the busiest and is a favourite weekend spot for city folk. There are some good walking trails to be found here as well as plenty of decent bars, cafes and restaurants.
Cycling: Christchurch is a good city for cycling as the city’s roads are considerate to cyclists with some specific bike lanes and holding bays at intersections. There are a number of companies in the city providing bike rentals and some will even deliver to your hotel. The city council also provides a cycling route map, which is worth getting hold of. One of the most popular cycling routes is along the cycle path by the Avon River.
Rugby: New Zealand is rugby-mad. The mighty All Blacks have perhaps done more to put New Zealand on the map than anyone. Christchurch is no exception to the rest of the country and in winter you will see budding All Blacks playing in Hagley Park. The local team, the Crusaders, play at Jade Stadium in Phillipstown and if you are here in the rugby season, then going to see a game is a must.
As with most of the country, you’re never far from a Bungee jumping site and there are options here with the ‘Slingshot’ in New Brighton and Thrillseekers Canyon at Hanmer Springs.
