Auckland Museum: otherwise known as the Auckland War Memorial Museum, this impressive facility is home to the world’s largest collections of Polynesian/Maori artefacts as well as applied arts, New Zealand natural history exhibits and New Zealand war exhibits. The various galleries within the museum offer a showcase for the natural, cultural and social history of the country.
New Zealand National Maritime Museum: hailed as one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world, the New Zealand National Maritime Museum houses a total of 14 galleries which are each home to a variety of artefacts tracing the history of the country’s relationship with the sea. Gain an insight into everything from the exploits of the first voyagers to the recent achievements of the country’s sporting heroes.
Auckland Art Gallery: widely acknowledged as the country’s finest art gallery, the Auckland Art Gallery is home to over 10,000 pieces of art work which originate from both New Zealand itself and various European countries. The main gallery is home to classic/period pieces while the newer gallery in the building opposite houses an impressive collection of contemporary works.
The country’s most respected artist, the now deceased Colin McCahon, has a room dedicated to him and his work in the new gallery. Visiting exhibitions make up part of the gallery’s calendar of events as well as family days and various talks and special programs.
