The animal attractions of Auckland Zoo and Kelly Tarlton's are generally high up on everybody’s list, while numerous destinations in the Hauraki Gulf offer visitors a true taste of the natural beauty available to the city.
Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World: here, visitors can get up close with creatures that are indigenous to the Antarctic environment and the world’s largest oceans, respectively.
Auckland Zoo: visitors won’t find shabby cages or sorry looking specimens at Auckland Zoo; they will however find over 500 magnificent animals from some 150 animal species, residing in environments carefully created to mimic their natural habitats.
The zoo is split into various themed sections as follows: Pridelands, Hippo River, Newstalk ZB Rainforest, the Asian Elephants, NZ Native Aviary, Kiwo and Tuatara House, the Just Juice Primate Trail and the Sealion and Penguin shores.
Auckland Museum: is undoubtedly one of the city’s most popular attractions and serves both as a commemoration to the country’s deceased servicemen and a natural history facility.
Besides fascinating examples of living and preserved flora and fauna, the facility offers daily Maori song and dance performances by a group called Manaia, during which audience participation is enthusiastically encouraged. Entry to the museum is entirely free although a small donation is suggested.
The boat used for the America’s Cup race lives permanently at the harbour and is available to take out groups of eight to ten passengers, all of whom are invited to man certain parts of the vessel and assist with its sailing.
