Introduction to Whangarei, New Zealand
As the capital of the Northland Region of New Zealand, Whangarei is the country's northernmost city and the most prominent international port. The city sits along Hatea River, which empties into Whangarei Harbour. The river has an incredible waterfall in Tikipunga, just north of the city. Just within the harbour lies Matakoe, also known as Limestone Island, a beautiful natural terrain accessible to tourists by boat from the harbour, best arranged through Whangarei hotels. Northeast of the city centre stands Mount Parihaka, a 20 million-year-old volcanic dome surrounded by Parihaka Scenic Reserve. The warm summers and mild winters have given the region the title of the winterless north, providing visitors with year-round opportunities for fun. Heritage Park is filled with exhibits on Whangarei and Northland, in addition to a Kiwi aviary and several historic buildings. Claphams National Clock Museum offers one of the largest collections of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere. An afternoon spent at Whangarei Quarry Gardens finds visitors surrounded by subtropical plants and a lake flanked by two waterfalls.other spellings: whangareihotels, wangarei hotell, whangarie otel, whangarye hote, whangarei hotle
