Introduction to Whakatane, New Zealand
On New Zealand's North Island, along the eastern Bay of Plenty, Whakatane is a sunny coastal town frequented by travellers exploring the region. Many come in on the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the world's most scenic touring routes that connects Auckland to Hawkes Bay. The shores of Whakatane offer a variety of activities, from fishing to jet-skiing to boating. A trip to volcanic White Island by boat allows visitors to climb on the country's only active marine volcano. There is very little vegetation on the island; instead, the centre is a crater pool filled with vividly green, steaming sulphuric acid surrounded by bright yellow towers billowing sulphuric fumes. Back on the mainland, locals frequent the Nga Tapuwae o Toi Walkways that loops through Whakatane township, through the bush and over to Ohope Beach, continuing along the coast back into town. Whakatane hotels can arrange a day swimming with dolphins and seals or guests can hire a kayak to paddle past orcas to Ohiwa Harbour. other spellings: whakatanehotels, wakatane hote, vakatane hotell, otelin whagatane, whakataen hotle
