Introduction to Wellington, New Zealand
The 'Windy City', as it is known by the locals, is the capital and one of the country's biggest tourist draws, combining culture, heritage and New Zealand's notoriously stunning scenery. The main harbour here is surrounded by vantage points, including Mount Victoria, offering a beautiful walk up to the summit at 200 metres, and Kelburn Botanic Garden, which runs a cable car to the top. The old government buildings at Lambton Quay include the biggest wooden building in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere, representing the historic heart of Wellington and colonial New Zealand. The city is famous for sculptures, which can be seen dotted around the centre - an excellent reason for a walking tour in the area between the harbour and Mount Cook. Wellington hotels in the centre offer excellent value for money for a modern world capital. Those with the best views are mostly located close to Waitingi Park.Visit our Wellington Travel Guide
