Introduction to Wanganui, New Zealand
The city of Wanganui (Whanganui) is found on the southwest coast of New Zealand's North Island. Its city centre is located along the northern bank of the Whanganui River, which flows from Mount Tongariro through Whanganui National Park. Through the spring, the city streets are lined with hanging flower baskets, and various art exhibitions can be found in the city throughout the year. There are a number of important sites easily reached from Wanganui hotels, including Sarjeant Art Gallery and the Royal Wanganui Opera House. The opera house is over a century old and the country's last Victorian theatre. The regional museum, the Riverboat Centre Museum and the Bason Botanic Gardens are additional city highlights. The major sporting venue here is Cook's Gardens, used for cricket, cycling and athletics. Four bridges provide access across the river, with the City Bridge leading to Durie Hill. An underground elevator, one of only two in the world, can take visitors to the top of the hill. The War Memorial Tower on the top of hill provides a beautiful view of the city.
