Gateway to stunning Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park, Wanaka is a small, tourist town with a host of big attractions. Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World is the star draw for families, featuring a huge maze and a number of wacky optical illusions. Just out of town are four skiing and snowboarding venues including the highest ski resort in New Zealand, Cardrona. Indeed, the biggest reason to come here is the array of outdoor activities on offer. Kayaking, fishing and boating are popular on the lake, just a short walk from the town centre. Mount Aspiring National Park offers a wealth of hiking and mountain biking trails, while the more adventurous will find opportunities for skydiving and bungee-jumping. A Lord of the Rings tour is also possible, taking in sights used during filming.
