Introduction to Tongariro Nat. Park, New Zealand
Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park in New Zealand, found in the central region of the North Island. It is the fourth-oldest park in the world. Because of its beautiful natural assets and rich history, UNESCO has acknowledged this park as both a natural and cultural World Heritage site, one of only 28 such sites to receive this double title. In the centre of the park are three active volcanic mountains, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, the summits of which are sacred in Maori culture. Additionally, there are a number of other religious sites for the Maori people within park. Visitors staying in Tongariro National Park hotels have a host of activities to choose between in every season; hiking and rock climbing are popular in the summer, while skiing and snowboarding are enjoyed on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu during the winter. The trails of Tongariro National Park can also be explored by mountain bike or on horseback, while the Mahuia River can be discovered through rafting. other spellings: tongariro nat. parkhotels, tongariro national otel, tongariro park hotell, tongariro hote
