Introduction to Timaru, New Zealand
In the southern Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand, Timaru is a major port on the eastern Pacific coast and the second-largest fishing port in the country. Its rolling hills were formed by lava flows from Mt Horrible, an extinct volcano that last erupted thousands of years ago. Local 'bluestone' buildings are made out of the natural volcanic basalt. The region's focal museum is the South Canterbury Museum, featuring Maori rock art, local maritime history and exhibits on Canterbury's geography and environment. Aigantighe Art Gallery is a large museum holding works that date back to the 16th century. From Timaru hotels, many visitors enjoy spending time on the beaches at Caroline Bay, a popular recreational area just along the coast from the harbour. Timaru's racetrack is located in Washdyke, which has a tidal lagoon and a wildlife refuge that hosts a variety of wading birds. Outside of the city, there are several beautiful communities included in the district of Timaru, such as Pleasant Point, Temuka and Geraldine.other spellings: timaruhotels, hote in temaru, thimaru otel, timaro hotell, timarue hotle, timaru hotles
