In the central Taranaki region on the North Island of New Zealand, Stratford is the only town found at the foot of the slopes of Mount Taranaki and Mount Egmont. These volcanic cones tower over the town, which is located in the ring plain of these two volcanoes to the northwest of the city. Visitors can take Pemproke Road up the mountain to the scenic lookout at the Plateau. Continue over Manganui Gorge to Manganui ski field, which is open for hiking and climbing during the warm months. Beyond the mountain, the region is mainly comprised of dairy farms, for which Stratford acts as a service town. The Patea River flows down Mount Taranaki and around Stratford before winding through the eastern hill country, beautiful for its steep landscapes and exotic forests. Two national parks are close to Stratford hotels; Wanganui National Park is a short drive to the east and Egmont National Park can be reached by going west. There are also a number of beautiful public parks in town, including King Edward Park, Victoria Park and Windsor Park.
