Introduction to Rotorua, New Zealand
Overlooking scenic Lake Rotorua, the town of the same name is known as New Zealand's geothermal hotspot. A major draw for tourists, the town appears in places to be on the brink of bubbling itself to a crisp due to the huge volcanic system exposed following the eruption of Mount Tarawera at the end of the 19th century. Sulfur Bay may be smelly but it is unlike any other landscape most visitors here will have seen, with its succession of sulfur vents and piping hot springs. For more arduous hiking, head to Waimangu Volcanic Valley where walking trails start at easy and end at more difficult, all taking in a host of dramatic landscapes. Great views at far less effort can be had on the Skyline gondola which works its way up Mount Ngongotaha. Fenton Street offers the best range of Rotorua hotels, some within walking distance of the beautiful Arikakapapa Reserve.Visit our Rotorua Travel Guide
