Introduction to Rotorua - Fenton Park
Rotorua is a historic spa town on Lake Rotorua in the north of New Zealand's North Island. It has drawn tourists with its rejuvenating hot springs and bubbling mud pools for at least 200 years. This geothermal activity is the result of the town's position on the Rotorua Caldera. The Fenton Park district is at the south end of Rotorua. Nearby are Kuirau Park, Whakarewarewa's Pohutu Geyser and the fabulous edifice that houses the town's Museum of Art and History. Fenton Park hotels are within walking range of most of these sites, and there are also a number of shops, bars and eateries here. Kuirau Park is a wonderful location with bubbling pools where visitors can dip their feet, although the sulphurous odour can take a few minutes to get used to. The forest at Whakarewarewa has garnered a reputation for its challenging mountain biking trails. Beaches such as Papamoa and Waihi on the Bay of Plenty are around 40kms or an easy daytrip away.
