Introduction to Queenstown - Arrowtown
Fans of the Lord of the Rings movies will recognise the breathtaking glacial lake and mountain scenery around New Zealand's South Island alpine resort of Queenstown, one of the country's premier visitor destinations. Nestling along the shoreline of beautiful Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by snow-capped mountain ranges, just the views here are inspiring and revitalising, even before the wide choice of activities is considered. Ski, snow, ice, adrenaline, heritage, art, culture, wine and fine food are what it's all about here. Close to the city is the historic gold-mining community of Arrowtown, just half an hour's drive away and set on the banks of the Arrow River. It strangely resembles a Wild West gold-rush town in America with its charming main street, small Arrowtown hotels and restored Chinese settlements. On the river close by is the Ford of Bruinen film location from the first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Gladden Fields location also sits just outside town.
