Introduction to Punakaiki, New Zealand
On the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, the small, inviting community of Punakaiki lies between Westport and Greymouth on the border of Paparoa National Park. The park stretches from the rugged beaches of the coastline through the lush rainforest, to the peaks of the Paparoa Mountains. The park is filled with limestone karst and mysterious caves that are ripe for exploration. One of the highlights of the area is the Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point, just south of the main village. During high tide, water from the sea bursts through blowholes along these heavily eroded limestone layers. There are several walkways that wind through the rock formations, easily accessible from Punakaiki hotels. Travellers can explore these trails on foot or horseback, or paddle along the Porarai River in a canoe or kayak. Fishing and surfing are popular activities on the shore, while rock climbing and bouldering entertain within the park. Punakaiki is known for its local craftsmanship, inviting visitors to watch its knife makers and glass blowers at work.other spellings: punakaikihotels, punakiaki hotell, punakiki otel, punakaike hote, puna kaiki hotle
