On the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, the small, inviting community of Punakaiki lies between Westport and Greymouth on the border of Paparoa National Park. The park stretches from the rugged beaches of the coastline through the lush rainforest, to the peaks of the Paparoa Mountains. The park is filled with limestone karst and mysterious caves that are ripe for exploration. One of the highlights of the area is the Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point, just south of the main village. There are several walkways that wind through the rock formations, easily accessible from Punakaiki hotels.
