Introduction to Pokeno, New Zealand
Pokeno is a small town southeast of Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand. Pokeno hotels were once a famous stop along the old State Highway 1. Despite the construction of a new motorway in the early 1990s, the town continues to be a popular stop for travellers looking to sample local food. The famous Pokeno ice cream shop is known for its generous portions, endless number of flavours and towering 11-scoop challenge - served in a double cone. The town has an important history, having housed a major military headquarters during the New Zealand Wars of the 19th century. A war memorial can be found in town, and the beautiful fortification built for the Invasion of the Waikato still stands on the Great South Road. To the northeast, visitors can explore the breathtaking hills of the Hunua Ranges, the region's largest forested landscape. The four dams located here supply water to all of its surrounding towns and cities. Carved through an ancient volcano, Hunua Falls are a popular sight in this impressive forest close to Pokeno.
