Introduction to Oamaru, New Zealand
On the southeast side on the South Island of New Zealand, Oamaru is the largest town in North Otago. This historic city along the Waitaki River is surrounded by significant archaeological sites from Maori culture, dating back to the 12th century. There are more archaic sites around Awamoa, Cape Wanbrow and in central Oamaru at Beach Road. In the rock shelters of Waitaki Valley, beautiful archaic art is mixed with classic and prehistoric sites from the 16th century. Oamaru hotels sit on streets surrounded by stunning limestone buildings housing museums, galleries and shops built in the neo-classical style from local Oamaru stone. Some of the parks and gardens here are among the oldest in the country, and the Glen Warren Reserve is filled with bicycle and hiking trails set against a lush, scenic forest. The harbour at Friendly Bay was once an important commercial port; now, a colony of little blue penguins lives here, while a colony of yellow-eyed penguins attracts tourists south of town. Across town, the Kakanui Mountains create a natural border on the horizon.other spellings: oamaruhotels, omaru hotell, oamaro otel, oamarua hote, oameru hotles, oamaru hotle
