Introduction to Kaikoura - Beach
Kaikoura Beach is located on the eastern coast of New Zealand's South Island, in the north of the island. The town grew around the whaling industry but is now a popular destination for whale- and dolphin-watching. Depending on the season, it is even possible to swim with dolphins and seals here. Visitors can see seals and fur seals close up on the beach, in their natural habitat. Fishing and surfing are options in Kaikoura. The area surrounding the town is absolutely breathtaking, with the snow-capped South Alps as a backdrop. There are many good walking and hiking trails up the mountains for visitors to enjoy. The views from atop Mount Fyffe are simply amazing. Named after the first family to settle in the area, the Fyffe House is now a New Zealand Historic Places Trust and is worth visiting.
