Like most towns and cities in New Zealand not named Auckland or Christchurch, Hastings is best suited for tourists who want to surround themselves in the serene landscapes where Lord of the Rings was famously filmed. The town is located halfway along the western coast of the North Island, placing it a few hundred kilometers south of Auckland. Along with the neighbouring city of Napier, Hastings is referred to as one of the 'Bay Cities' for its geographical proximity to Hawke's Bay, which is 20kms to the west. While tourism is just beginning to catch on in New Zealand's 14th most populous city, it has already built a service industry to provide for the surrounding region, which is mostly rural, making it well equipped to ramp up the industry in a hurry.
