Introduction to Franz Josef - State Highway 6
State Highway 6 is the name of the main highway which runs through Franz Josef, New Zealand. This small community on the South Island's west coast lies just five kilometres from its main tourist attraction, the massive Franz Josef Glacier. The permanent population of Franz Josef may be just 330 people, but its surrounding glacier area receives approximately 250,000 visitors per year. Approximately 2,000 Franz Jozef guests stay at one of the conveniently located State Highway 6 hotels during the area's busiest tourist season. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk from the community of Franz Josef to its namesake glacier, among the few New Zealand glaciers which remains growing while so many others are shrinking in size. Guided walks up Franz Josef Glacier are available, but those who wish to climb the glacier without assistance are strongly advised to use crampons and ice axes. After exploring the glacier, visitors can then receive a massage or relax in one of the soothing hot pools filled with glacier water. Aerial tours of the glacier and the neighbouring Fox Glacier are also widely available.
