Things to do in New Caledonia
Noumea - go on a scuba diving trip for whale watching
The beautiful waters around Noumea offer some wonderful opportunities to see the underwater fauna of the region, in its natural habitat and one of the most spectacular of these is whale watching. The best time of the year to see these magnificent animals is between July and September, in the shallower lagoons, during their mating season. Unlike elsewhere in the world, it is one of the few places you can see whales whilst scuba diving.Noumea - view architectural design at the St Joseph Cathedral
The cathedral at St Joseph in Noumea is very French in its architectural design, which helps to explain why the city's nickname is “Little Paris”. The twin towers at the front of the cathedral are very unusual, as are the two clocks. The outside of the cathedral building is transformed at night when it is lit up, during certain times of the year, such as special festivals. The front facade is used as a projection for the lights, giving a myriad of colours and pictures.Introduction to New Caledonia
New Caledonia is one of the venerable French speaking South Pacific Ocean tourist islands. It has been well established as a holiday island for many decades and very few cruises that operate in the area fail to dock here for at least one night.
The sight of several giant ships glittering at night in the main port at Noumea the capital, is quite startling.
Around a quarter of a million people live in New Caledonia and most of them work in the tourism industry.
There are plenty of New Caledonia hotels despite the fact that many people who stay here do so on board the cruise ship they arrived on.
Other hotels in New Caledonia cater to guests who have flown directly to the islands and many of these accommodations are five star resorts that offer the last word in luxury.
Other New Caledonia hotels are medium price level outfits that cater to less well heeled visitors.
