The country’s history is long but its most significant developments occurred in the Middle Ages and in more recent times with its independence from Belgium occurring as recently as 1830. The Netherlands prospered under the reign of the Orange family from which the current monarch, Queen Beatrix is a direct descendent. The monarchy continues to be an important aspect of the country however realistically; it has very little constitutional power.
Amsterdam is the country’s capital city and is famous for many things, not least for its marijuana coffee bars and red light district. While these would indeed be two reasons why many visitors flock there, the city has much more to offer with its scenic waterways, cultural museums and galleries and fascinating historic buildings. In the summer, the city’s Vondelapark comes alive with both tourists and locals looking to enjoy the good weather while the winter season sees the frozen canals filled with ice-skaters.
The Netherlands is an exceedingly visitor-friendly country with a solid tourist infrastructure that sees holiday makers and weekend trippers arrive throughout the year. Undoubtedly the Netherlands’ relaxed attitude to soft-drug use is a major draw card for many, but for a significant number of others, the country’s unique personality and charm combined with its distinctly European ambience, make it a popular destination.
Amsterdam and other major cities offer a plethora of accommodation options as well as solid transportation infrastructures which allow for easy access and efficient cross-city travel.
