Along with paintings from the Golden Age, there is some exciting modern art and there are museums devoted to photography, film and theatre. Unique to Holland, you’ll also find museums such as the Heineken Experience and the Houseboat Museum. Amsterdam boasts some of the finest art collections in the world and its art houses and museums document its rich history and culture.

Rijksmuseum: is Holland’s largest museum, attracting more than one million visitors annually. The building is a familiar city landmark and houses a collection of Dutch art that is unrivalled. Museum van Loon: has a small but quite interesting collection in an impressive patrician house that is characteristic of houses found in the city centre. A visit to the museum is a good opportunity to see the inside of one of these homes. This particular one is still owned privately by the van Loon family. Madame Tussaud’s Scenerama: is one of the best of all the Madame Tussaud museums and features models of many famous Dutch figures. Visitors can watch new models being created in the museum’s special modelling room. Telephone: +31 20 523 0623; website: www.madametussauds.nl
