Driving is very much discouraged within the canal ring sector. You’ll note that cycling is the preferred way for most locals to travel - and some visitors say that it’s the only way to truly get to know the city. Travel by water taxi offers a different perspective and means for getting around as well.
Metro: the Metro is fast but not particularly convenient for getting to most of the tourist destinations in the centre. It is useful, however if you want to travel outside the city centre or to the Amsterdam Arena.
Train: train services are not designed for stops within the city, but are useful for visitors connecting to Schiphol Airport, or to other destinations beyond Amsterdam.
Tram: trams can be an ideal means for getting around the city and run frequently. The number 20 tram takes a circular tour passing most of the museums and main sights of interest.
Bicycle and foot: bicycles are really the most efficient way of getting around the city. You’ll find dedicated bicycle lanes and traffic lights and some rather aggressive cyclists, so use caution until you’ve got used to the style of riding here. Bicycle theft is rampant, so it’s important to lock your bike properly whenever it’s not in use. Walking is a good means of getting around also, as most tourist routes are easily covered by foot.
