Taking its name from the many artificial freshwater lakes that surround it, Wijdemeren is a popular area for extended bike tours in the northern part of the Netherlands. During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, many wealthy traders from Amsterdam built magnificent estates in this area. Today, these estates are open to the public and provide the backdrop for car and bike tours around Wijdemeren. The Netherlands’ impressive network of canals runs throughout the area, giving another great option for touring. The handful of small towns in Wijdemeren is typical of Dutch hamlets, with little in the way of tourist attractions. There is no nightlife here, but plenty of small cafes are on hand to keep the cyclists nourished. A decent number of Wijdemeren hotels and inns are also in each of the towns, catering to the touring cyclists who tend to head out during the day for a ride and return in the afternoon to rest.
