The major Dutch city and university town of Tilburg is set in the south of the country in Noord-Brabant Province. Founded some 1,200 years ago, the town became a city in the early 19th century, with the coming of the Industrial Revolution. Tilburg was a wool town due to the surrounding pasturelands, traditionally used for grazing sheep. In fact, it quickly attained the title of 'Wool Capital of the Netherlands', boasting 145 mills by 1881. The industry collapsed in the 1960s and was replaced by logistics and transport companies. The city and its wide choice of Tilburg hotels are surrounded by beautiful countryside, great for walks, hikes and cycling. The picturesque main square holds attractive old buildings, a fine large church and a selection of bars and restaurants. Every July, the square is taken over by a huge funfair that lasts 10 days and attracts visitors from all over the Netherlands, with a massive gay parade known as Pink Monday held on the first Monday of the event.
