In the southwest corner of the Netherlands, where three European rivers converge at a delta to empty into the sea, is the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. This region of the country is known as Zeeland. Home to the world's largest harbour, Rotterdam is just to the north and Belgium is directly south of the delta. Zierikzee is the main town on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. This historic place is full of important landmarks, buildings and waterworks. It is a popular tourist destination for people in search of a rural holiday and a slightly different take on Dutch culture. The western side of the island gets the most tourism thanks to its lovely beaches, Brouwersdam and the sand dunes at Westenschouwen. These two towns are good choices for Schouwen-Duiveland hotels, though the larger towns nearby also have plenty of small inns. For fun after dark, head to Renesse, a town on the west coast with the best nightlife on the island.
