Introduction to Rotterdam, Netherlands
Typically overshadowed in terms of tourism by Amsterdam, the Netherlands' second city has long been one of the world's great ports and a bustling postmodern metropolis with a vibrant, creative energy. There is little in the way of old history here. Though the city's lineage can be traced back to 1572, bombing in WWII all but erased any traces of this noble history. Today, Rotterdam hotels offer great access to a unique mix of brash, modern architecture, superb museums and an enervating cultural atmosphere founded on multiculturalism and an edgy arts scene. Waterside walks in Boompjes offer the chance to view the striking Willemswerf building. A short walk to the west, the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen contains one of the world's greatest collections of fine art. Historic Rotterdam was not completely eradicated by WWII, thankfully. Fans of architecture will also want to see the Huis Sonneveld, a prime example of Dutch functionalism from 1933 that sits less than 10 minutes' walk to the west of the city centre.Visit our Rotterdam Travel Guide
